The gas tank gauge, also known as the fuel sending unit, sits inside your fuel tank and measures the fuel level. It sends an electrical signal to the dash gauge so you know how much gas you have. As the fuel level drops, the float moves down, changing the resistance value and moving your dash gauge toward empty. These units fail when the float develops a leak and sinks, the resistor wears out from constant contact, or the wiring corrodes from ethanol exposure. A gauge that reads full all the time, bounces erratically, or sits on empty regardless of fuel level usually points to a bad sending unit. Replacing the sending unit means accessing the fuel tank. Many vehicles have an access panel under the rear seat or in the trunk floor. Others require dropping the tank. Disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector, remove the lock ring, and pull the old unit out. Install the new one carefully to avoid bending the float arm.
