What to Know About Used Map Sensor
The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor measures air pressure inside the intake manifold and sends that data to the ECM, which uses it as a key input for calculating the correct air-fuel mixture. On turbocharged engines it also monitors boost pressure. When the sensor fails, the ECM is working with bad data. A failed MAP sensor causes the ECM to miscalculate fuel delivery, resulting in a rich or lean condition, hard starting, rough idle, poor fuel economy, and a check engine light. On boosted engines a faulty MAP sensor can prevent the turbo control system from functioning correctly. This is a common failure point on high-mileage engines where the vacuum hose cracks or the sensor membrane degrades. The sensor is usually located on or near the intake manifold and is a relatively quick replacement.
