Full service or U-pull, and why Phoenix lets you choose

Two business models exist and most metros only give you one of them properly. Phoenix gives you both, within reach of each other, which makes the choice a real one.

A full service yard takes the part off for you. You call, they check, they quote, and it's waiting when you get there. A U-pull charges you to walk in, points you down a row, and you bring your own tools and do the work. The second one costs a fraction of the first and takes a couple of hours out of your day.

The deciding factor is usually the car rather than the money. Daily driver that has to work Monday morning, pay for full service and stop thinking about it. Project car, spare weekend, or a part you can replace at your own pace: go pull it and keep the difference. Listings usually say which kind a yard is; when they don't, that's your first question on the call.

Trucks, and a lot of them

Suspension and steering, more than most places

Air bags and tail light assemblies lead here as they do everywhere, but third place goes to front spindle knuckles, which is unusual. Behind those sit doors, strut assemblies and control arms, front and rear.

That's a heavier front end and suspension mix than the other states show, which helps if that's what you're chasing. Knuckles, struts and control arms are expensive new, they're genuinely reusable, and an independent shop will happily fit a used one where they'd hesitate over a used electrical part. Mirrors, axle shafts and wheels round out the busiest items.

Worth knowing about air bags

Air bags are the single most listed part in Arizona, so here is the blunt version. A used air bag module has to be the correct part number for your exact car, and it needs fitting by somebody who knows what they're doing. Yards here sell a lot of them and the good ones will ask you questions before they'll sell you one. Take that as a sign you're dealing with the right yard, not an obstacle.

Have this ready before you dial

Year, make, model, trim, engine. Trim catches people out on anything built after the mid 2000s, more often than you'd think. If you can get to the number stamped on the old part, read that out too and you'll cut the call to half a minute.

Ask what the warranty is and what happens if it doesn't fit before you pay, not after. Thirty to ninety days is normal around Phoenix, and the terms vary enough between yards that the question earns its ten seconds.

Never just show up

Listings trail reality by days. Something shown as available last week may have gone on Tuesday. A five minute call confirms it's on the shelf and saves you crossing the valley for nothing.
