The throttle switch, also called a throttle position switch or TPS, is mounted on the throttle body and tells the engine control module how far open the throttle plate is. It's a critical input for fuel injection, ignition timing, and transmission shift scheduling. On older vehicles it's a simple switch. On newer ones it's a variable-resistance sensor. A bad throttle switch causes hesitation or stumbling on acceleration, a surge at idle, poor fuel economy, or a check engine light with a TPS code.
